MIT

August 3, 2010 - 3:47pm -- leadacademy

Dear blog,
Today was very exciting. I went to MIT and it took an hour ride on the bus to get there. I learned so much about space. The thing that interested me the most was the centrifuge. I found out it spins 60 miles per hour and that if you go on the moon it ages your bones by ten times! After that, some of the girls had the chance to go on the moon walker. There is a vest that you put on and it pulls you up so you feel as though you are on the moon or mars.

A Day at MIT

August 3, 2010 - 3:31pm -- leadacademy

The day at MIT started with an exhausting bus ride to the college. Once we were of the bus, we stretched our tired bodies and enter the building. We had a PHD student guide us throughout the building. He brought us to a room and gave us a short introduction about the college, what he does, and the other programs that are associated with the college. After he was done speaking, he brought us to a room that had a centrifuge in it. The man explained what it was and and the purpose of the machine. We would have been able to go on it, but it was under construction. They were trying to...

Moon Walk at MIT

August 3, 2010 - 3:28pm -- leadacademy

Today we took a bus to Cambridge. It took about 45 minutes. Then we went into this building about aerospace adn met these two people. The were both scientists. One was named Brad and he brought us into his lab which was the Motor Vehicle lab. He shwed us a lot of cool machines. He Showed us a centrifuge which was this platform where a person layed down and spun around the center of rotation. We learned about the inner ear and the liquids inside it. Then we went in the other part of the lab and Brad talked to us about space. He told us space suits are very hard to move in and he showed us...

Goddard Girls

August 3, 2010 - 3:24pm -- leadacademy

So far the week at Goddard girls is pretty fun.Today we took a bus to Cambridge to talk about space. The bus ride took about 40 mins. When we got there a scientist named Brad gave us a tour of his lab. We saw a contraption called a Centrifuge. This peice of technology is for astronaunts up in space. This helpes the astronauts get as much calcium as their bones need, because in space there is no pressure so their bones lose alot of calcium and thay are of no use when the astronauts get to the space station , moon or any other place there going. the Centrifuge spins in a circle around and...

Trip to the MIT on the Moon

August 3, 2010 - 3:19pm -- leadacademy

We spent a day at MIT today. It was slow paced at first when we had to take a hour long bus ride to get there. Then, We waited and listened to a lecture/discussion all about space suits and attempts to modernize them. The day drastically inmproved when we were able to go on the moon walker. A simple contraction made of pulleys, a battery, a metal support, and wiring. The moon walker makes you lighter by hooking you onto the device. Then, you walk, hop, and run on the treadmill beneath it. WARNING!!! The moon walker can give wedgie/rashes as my fried puts it.

     Yesterday was...

safety

August 2, 2010 - 3:59pm -- leadacademy

Today we basically learned all about safety! We learned what things would be the most important and the least importantin different experiences. We learned what you would need if you went of the boat and were on an island. The best one was learning about what you would need if you landed ofcaorse on the moon. That was more fun because we need shelter to survive, so we built forts that we would use on the moon. We were split into groups and we rolled up newspapers, then stapled them together to make our fort. After we were all finished with our forts, we combinded them together to make one...

First Day Fun

August 2, 2010 - 3:58pm -- leadacademy

Today was the first day of Goddard Girls. At first, it was really quiet beacause only the Davinci Divas knew each other, but then everyone started to talk and it became more lively. We first talked space and what NASA is. Then we moved on to our first activity and tried to survive in Jamestown with our groups. Then we went to the STEM lab and tried to survive on the moon in 2025. Next we built moon habitats. It was a lot of work, but it was really fun in the end when we put them all together. And we all had our pedometers today. Some girls got up to 2000 steps, but I only got about 1097. I...

The First Day Of Camp

August 2, 2010 - 3:58pm -- leadacademy

August 2, 2010

Today was the first day of camp. It was not exactly what I had planned because, the first activity we did today was survival lists, which really dont interest me at all. We did 2 of them which I think was too many. Also the second activity we did today was building our moon habitat. It was a whole lot of fun. We had to roll up 37 pieces of 4 newspapers stacked in a pile to make these logs. Then we followed the guidelines of the packet we were given. From there we stapled them into the form they should be. Next we stapled all the parts together and got a wicked awesome...

Survival

August 2, 2010 - 3:57pm -- leadacademy

Today we learned a lot about survival. We even did survival activities of back then and the future. I learned that one of the most important items for survival is oxygen, food and water. Without any of these things you probably wouldn't be able to survive. We also went to the stem lab and built moon habitats. We learned that moon habitats are for humans when they land on the moon. The moon habitats that we built today were made out of newspaper but some of them were very sturdy and firm and some -my group's included- were kind of flimsy and they were hard to stay put. After each individual...

First Day!!

August 2, 2010 - 3:56pm -- leadacademy
Today was a awesome day!!! It was fulled of adventures and suprises!! My favorite part would have to be when we made like our own little forts at the UMASS place.I loved the way it turned out!!! My teamates and I had a ball trying to figure out how to roll the paper in those little tube things, then trying to start a structure. Another good part of my day was that survival now and then thing. I liked that becacuse it was cool. You were like getting your point of view with your servival things and a point of view with the experts. Also I'Ve already made lots of friends so thats...

Davinci Divas' trip to the Ecotarium

August 2, 2010 - 3:38pm -- thinksmart

Tuesday, August 27, 2010

Our second day as Davinci Divas and we explore the many habitates of each animal we saw. The princible we learned today was Sfumato. The whole purpose was to watch a show about planets and galexies in the planetarium. Most od the show was about the predictions scientists today have of two galaxies colliding in to one. Our adventer moved on as we learned about there habitats. We discovered more and more. The lesson reminded me of a book I read, Invissible Man by Ralph Ellison and he comes to his own ideas of the world an d trusting himself and himself only....

Divas visiting the art. (:

August 2, 2010 - 3:36pm -- thinksmart

On July 29th, we visited the Worcester Art Museum. (;

The first gallery we visited... well, I don't remember the name but we got to see the oldest colonial paintings in America. On the left was Mr.Freake ( pronounced frate ; 8D ) wearing his best clothing. His jacket had 28 silver buttons. On the right was Mrs.Freake and her daughter. The daughter was very stiff. The artist was untrained and didn't go to school, since his living was drawing buildings, designing them...

Divas at the SIM Lab

August 2, 2010 - 3:34pm -- thinksmart

On July 3oth, a Friday, in the year 2010, the girls who were at the progam, "Davinci Divas" payed a visit to the medical school section of UMASS. We were givin a tour of the SIM labs. The SIM stands for Simutation. They have life like manniquens that can simulate situations for students in the medical feild. They can take blood, take IV, and take blood pressure like they could a normal person. They could really do anything they could a normal patient, but without the risks of doing it on a real person.

They had 5 simulation manniquens. One full sized adult male, one full sized child...

Davinci Diva's making CEV's!!

August 2, 2010 - 3:34pm -- thinksmart

To start off, on thursday 29th 2010  we went to the STEM lab to design and build CEV's. CEV's are Crew Exploration Vehicle's, relating to the Space topic and Leonardo topic, it was a great mixture of works. I personally thought this particular activty was truly interesting. My group and I came up with a sphere-like shaped rocket that gave viewers eyes a twic, as in it was unique from others. But what REALLY gave it a shiny effect was the tin-foil covering the outside of the CEV. Also not only that our CEV had a tin-foil layer but we even added a heat isolation layer to keep the  heat in...

Divas In Shining Armor

August 2, 2010 - 3:34pm -- thinksmart

When you hear the word, "diva", you must instantly think : "sassy, sweet, fashionable, independent". Obviously, the word "armor" doesn't come to mind at first. Neither does "renissance, medival, or gothic". It's actually far from it. But the DaVinci Divas of this very Girls Inc. were learning about the other side of the typical story of the damsel in distress and the knight in shining armor, Friday, July 30th.  We learned about the typical medival male behind a suit of armor. 9 times out of 10 it was a particularly rich kid from the 14th century, showing off all of Daddy's money. Some of them...
