A Day in being an Engineer

August 5, 2010 - 10:09am -- leadacademy

Ahh another in space was thrilling........Nahh sike we were in Umass campus creating prototype CEV. What is that you asked? Well CEV is crew exploration vehicles that go into space. Well it was all fun and games till lunch arrived

The Girls at the STEM Lab

August 5, 2010 - 9:58am -- leadacademy

8 - 4- 10

At the STEM Lab, a part of UMASS, the Goddard girls did numerous things. We saw what happened to our legs when the force of gravity was changed by leaning them against a wall at 90 degrees, and measuring certain points in our leg, then standing and measuring the same point, then seeing what part of our legs expanded or contracted due to the change in gravity force.

Later we designed and built prototypes for CEV's, or Crew Exploration Vehicles. My team and I just modified a CEV that was made last week by the Davinci Diva's, which I was in, and it was done before most...

Goddard Girls

August 5, 2010 - 9:57am -- leadacademy

Yesterday we went to the Stem Lab in Worcester. We all did an activity called Leg Up, this activity wasnt all that fun but it was very educational, the activity was to simulate the problems that the astronauts have in space. We worked on that activity for a while and then we talked about it and what we found. After that we had about a half an hour to desighn a CEV which is a space vehichle. That was pretty fun. Then it was lunch time PIZZA! very good. Afterwards we built our CEV and then we presented it this was a pretty fun day.

stem labratory

August 5, 2010 - 9:57am -- leadacademy

During my third day at goddard girls summer program, we went to the umass stem labratory and I had lots of fun. In the morning, I did an experiment on body fluids and leg circumference. I learned that on Earth your body fluid is below heart level, but on the moon the water or H2o in your body is the same in all parts of the body. It is because of this that astronauts do not feel thirsty. In the afternoon, I really enjoyed designing, building, and demonstrating my cev. I learned that CEV is an acronym that stands for crew explorartion vehicle. The most fun part of today was talking with Mrs...

Cev Creativity

August 5, 2010 - 9:56am -- leadacademy

The Goddard Girls went to the STEM lab again yesterday. First we talked about how astronauts feel on space and how they feel when their fluid travel up and around thier bodies due the anti-gravity in space. Then we started to design our CEV's [crew exploration vehicle]. We finished buliding them after lunch and they looked really nice as the finished product. The we all took a little walk to take a picture at the Umass sign and went home. So  Far, So good! :]

ASTRONAUTS

August 5, 2010 - 9:54am -- leadacademy

Yesterday we wnet to the Stem Lab and we built CEVs which stands for  Crew Exploration Vehicles. When we were there we also measured  the circumferences of our claves, ankle and thighs. I learned a lot about the importance of teamwork yesterday becaue if you go to space with a crew you need to be able to communicate with each other without fighting all the time because then you'll definitely get nothing done. Thte CEVS we built came rather nice if I do say so myself. I was proud of the creativity of all the girls. We also tried some dehydrated food.....to be honest with you I thought that...

Building CEV's.

August 5, 2010 - 9:48am -- leadacademy

Yesterday, we build prototypes of CEV's. CEV stands for Crew Exploration Vehicle. CEV's are designed to send people up to space to explore. The picture below is an example of a CEV.

My team's CEV was called the Nebula, named after the planet that Buzz Lightyear ( yes, from Toy Story ) is from. We used a Minute Maid pink lemonade cardboard box as our base. We had solar panels off on the sides and a parachute as a landing...

First day

August 5, 2010 - 9:47am -- leadacademy

The first day of the goddard girls was fun. We got to make a moon habitat and work together with a group as a team. It was great and fun because it taught me how to work as a team. Also I learned, although if you dont like someone, you have to treat them how you want to be treated no matter what. And, there will always be a person that you wont get along with, and you have to deal with it.

August 4th 2010

August 5, 2010 - 9:40am -- leadacademy
Yesterday we went to the UMASS thing. Over there we built CEV's. A CEV is a crew exploration vehicle.I thought that the CEVs were kind of fun. Our CEVs logo was Blast Off..... We picked that name because it was the first thing that popped our head when we started. The people in my group there names were Jasmine,Lin,And me Destiny. Also we had dehydrated icecream. i thought it was the most nastiest thing i had ever tasted!! HAHA thats one of the reasons i don't want to be a astronaut. Also for lunch we had pizza, cookies, and soda. It was reall good food!! Well im looking forward for the rest of...

CEVs

August 5, 2010 - 9:40am -- leadacademy

On August 4 the Goddard Girls went to the stem lab to do an activity. Once we were there, we went over what a  CEV is. A CEV is a crew exploration vehicle. The adults handed out packets that guided us to make a model of a CEV. There were requirements, like tanks of oxygen, water and food. They split us up into groups and were sent off to design our CEV. We first had to draw the vehicle and plan where we are going to put everything. After the group completed that task, they were able  to start on the real model. There were a variety of materials there for all of us to use. My group...

At the Stem Lab

August 5, 2010 - 9:39am -- leadacademy

Yesterday, we went to the stem lab and built CEV, or crew exploration vehicles. We split up into groups and used recyclable items to create CEV prototypes. Wer used an old Tide bottle and a few other plastic items on the outside. On the inside, we used cardboard as a main furniture source! To tell the truth, our group failed miserably! Well, not miserably, but it didn't quite turn out how we thought it would! For lunch we had pizza and cookies. Definetely better than a sandwich! Then someone came up with thwe idea of blowing up gloves as balloons! Of course, everyone had to make one! Then,...

cevs

August 5, 2010 - 9:36am -- leadacademy

today we went to one of the teachers worrks and we had to makeing veachals aand it is cald CEVS becas cru exploration veachals it was riily fun because you could make a space ship for the astronots and at the same time you can be modoling the in sid of it it was really really fun nyou shuld go to girls ink it is rilly fun

Legup for NASA

August 5, 2010 - 9:34am -- leadacademy

Today we came to camp and went almost immediately to the stem lab. That is where we do experiments and build things. TOday we were supposed to do this program called leg up. This was supposed to simulat what it was like for the inside of your body to have no gravity and where on your body would be thinner and fatter. First we measured three different places on our legs the ankle calf, and thigh. Then we stood still for ten minutes and saw how that affected the measurments. After that we layed in a reclined position for ten minutes and wrote all the Data in a graph. WE had another activity...

CEV's

August 5, 2010 - 9:33am -- leadacademy

Well, yesterday we did CEV's. For the Goddard girls they had to build and design their Crew Exploration Vechiles from scratch. But luckily for my group since I was a Da Vinci Diva. I decided to make it easiler for my group and choosed to remodel my CEV because in my case I thought that it would save more time. But also then I could help the ones that arent done or ones that need help. And I also was lucky to have such a easy going team we finished our CEV with hours left. Though sadly when everyone was done 1 of the Booster's fell off but I said to myself " no problem a little glue would do...

MIT

August 3, 2010 - 3:58pm -- leadacademy

Today, I went to MIT.There  I learned about what happens to  the muscles when you go up ionto space, what happens is the muscle age ten times faster. This is a problem because the muscles weaken to fast. After, I learned about how MIT is working on a new space suit to help the astronauts move around better, and be safer. The astronauts can move around better beacuse the material is more flexible, unlike the suits we have now. The safer part about this new spacesuit is if the suit gets a hole in it the person who wears it will only get bruises. But, the spacesuits we have now get a rip, the...

my day at M.I.T

August 3, 2010 - 3:58pm -- leadacademy

        Dear Blog,

Today was very interesting. I went to M.I.T.It took an hour And a half to get there.First we talked to this science guy who showed us this spinney thing that if you closed your eyes, you woulden't feel like your spinning. Also i met a new friend named Jakie.we hade lunch at Subway,Then we went to this Moonwalk thing.also i saw a robot and it was 1 of the 2 in the world! bye!

A Day in an Imaginative Space

August 3, 2010 - 3:54pm -- leadacademy

Well my started off with a bus ride to MIT. That's the college in Boston that works with NASA. A man whose name I don't recall showed us into one of the labs there. He talked about what MIT does as research and stuff like that. I also learned about how gravity keeps your bones and everything in check so if you go up in space it would mess up the balance in your body. They also explain to us about the space suit and its challenges. They also showed us new designs of a new space suit which seemed pretty cool. They also had a moonwalker that makess you feel like your walking on space and...

A Day with MIT

August 3, 2010 - 3:51pm -- leadacademy

Today we took a trip to Boston and went to a MIT, a college in Boston. We learned that onn the moon its hard to walk because of how the space suit is formed. They are filled with gas for humans to breath. That gas is called oxygen in order for us to live we need it. Moon and Mars are the only two heavenly bodies that NASA has ever visited and done some investigation and work on it. We also saw how astronauts walk on moon and mars. The space suit has a reflex as a balloon, so it not easy to bend, they have a certain moon walk. We had experienced the  moon walk by connecting a harness that...

interesting..!

August 3, 2010 - 3:50pm -- leadacademy

To start off the day it begins whern we took a feild trip! to MIT. what we learned about space and all the fasanating things that went on and what happens throught out it. one thing that i learned is how they controlled space siuts and how they built them in a special way. they have this robot kind of machine that gives oif data and how hard it is to move to the astronauts body suit. Counter fuse machine that its a kind of machine that may sound confusing but its really FUN!! so what you do is that you lay down and your spinning really fast and it feels like your...
