Vision, Values and our Strategic Plan

November 4, 2009 - 7:12pm -- cathisblog

On Saturday, October 24, Girls Inc's Board of Directors and leadership team met for a day long retreat.  Our very inspiring speaker for the morning was Dr. David Jordan, President and CEO of Seven Hills Foundation.  The focus was on creating a vision - to challenge, inspire and empower - girls, staff, parents, Board members and all who touch and are touched by Girls Inc.

Tomorrow morning, we begin to define the work of the new strategic planning committee - and the Board and staffs' roles in moving us closer to the vision.  One step at a time; one goal at a time; grounded in our...

We have had a busy week at Girls Inc!  The Annual Meeting was last Wedneesday and we brought in a great group of new Board members, led by new President Victoria Waterman and including Dora and Akuah, the two young women who will be the youth representatives.

We honored outgoing Board President Joan Bertrand, and Board Members Marcy Supovitz and Mary Goretti. The program included the rededication of George I Alden Hall, our renovated auditorium. Deborah Penta inspired us with her reflections on mentors along our life journey.

We will conclude this week with a Strategic...

Worcester Academy is an awesome neighbor!!  Little did I know when they invited me to be on their Board of Visitors that they were going to showcase Girls Inc's partnership with the Girls Varsity LaCrosse Team as part of the day!  When I asked why we were chosen for a dialogue with members Zoe Eth and Mary Claire Pelletier and Coach Erin Flynn, Carolyn Reich, Stewardship and Constituent Relations Officer told me that it was because so many of the girls had identified their work in this very new partnership as the most important and special service project they had done!  All I could say...

Girls Inc has a great new partnership with UNUM for a girls' high school leadership development program. Our launch was last night when 9 girls joined Jen Roy from UNUM, Kijah Clark, Girls Inc's fearless Program Manager and myself (not so fearless) at the Central Rock Climbing Gym for a great night of fun!

After the climbing, we had pizza and planning for the next phases of the program.  The girls BLEW US AWAY with their hopes for the outcomes of this program - wanting to be role models for the younger girls - wanting to make a difference in Worcester - wanting to support each other...

It has been a VERY SPECIAL summer filled with wonderful experiences for the kids who have participated in our summer programs at Winthrop House and Camp Kinneywood - and for the Girls Inc staff and volunteers!

Let me start at the end and work back... a gathering of about 150 proud parents, families, staff and sponsors at Clark University on Friday night celebrated this year's Bruce Wells' Upward Bound scholars. Two of the young women who were honored - Akuah and Dora, pictured with me - honored us with a great two-week internship program here at Winthrop House!!  They attended...

TD Banknorth invited our GREAT new program manager, Kijah Clark and myself to attend the Worcester Tornadoes game (against the Quebec Capitales!) tonight.  The evening started out with a picnic dinner and a visit from Twister the Tornadoes' cuddly mascot.  We were able to spend time with several of the friendly TDBanknorth staff - getting to know them better and thanking them for their growing support of our economic literacy program!!!  And we had a chance to catch up with a few of our nonprofit colleagues.  Great night!  And, a bit of the truth - we left before the game was over so

Dora and Akuah

Hey girls summer interns, Akuah and Dora, talking. We've had a great week so far at the Girls Inc. of Worcester. Each day we learn what goes into running this organization and what we can do to make it better for the next two years.

On August 6, 2009 we were invited to the Leading Women MASS Breakfast with guest speaker Dr. Anne Perschel. While there, we met many leading women who were ready to absorb the powerful message from Dr. Perschel about Finding Your Flow. She talked about how there isn't really a work/life balance, but you need to have a flow state. Your flow state is when...

Girls Inc's computer Lab is getting a "Extreme Makeover - Camp Reach Edition!"  Thirty young women entering seventh grade from across Central MA have been at Worcester Polytechnic Institute for Camp Reach, a two-week residential program for girls interested in pursuing a career in engineering. TEAM GIRLS INC "adopted" us and our project - to redesign our computer lab to make it more comfortable, welcoming, and an environment conducive to learning.

The girls were here last week to study the room where we have the lab now and the room where we want to relocate it!  They presented...

Back from vacation and celebrating the summer programs

July 24, 2009 - 6:26pm -- cathisblog

After spending my one week vacation driving to California, I have jumped right back into the wonderful world of Girls Inc.

  • This week a group of 10 middle school girls had a jumpin' week of fun and exercise of Double Dutch Jumprope sponsored by the Red Auerbach Foundation.
  • Over 70 children and youth had a great time at Camp Kinneywood, even in the rain! We appreciated Ms. Susan Sullivan's Letter to the Editor in the T&G last week.
  • Today the children in the In Town program ended the week by going roller skating.
  • The Girls Inc participation in

This week has opened a whole new world to 9 young Middle School aged women and me - the world of HOW TO THINK LIKE LEONARDO DA VINCI!!  Based on Clark Alum Michael Gelb's book How To Think Like Leonardo DaVinci, these young women, along with several Girls Inc staff and volunteers are half-way through a journey focused on the seven principles: Curiosity, Learning by Doing; Sensory Learning; Sfumato (you have to look that one up!); Body/Mind connection; Art/Science Connection; and How Everything in Connected!  We have studied Leonardo, practiced some yoga, gone on urban hikes and swimming;...

A CHALLENGE FROM A FRIEND - WITH THANKS

June 15, 2009 - 2:31pm -- cathisblog

Deborah Penta is a great advocate and friend of Girls Inc!!!

Last week, she heard that enrollment at Girls Incorporated of Worcester’s Camp Kinneywood and In-Town programs (both programs are co-ed in the summer) was down 40% from our very conservative projections based on the struggling economy.  Today, Ms. Penta, President of Penta Communications and the Female Leadership Interest Council (FLIC) issued a challenge to the greater Worcester community in support of Girls Inc...

WHAT A GREAT CELEBRATION!

June 13, 2009 - 11:18am -- cathisblog

Thursday's Girls' Celebration Event was my best day so far in 8 months and 1 week!  Mayor Konnie Lukes talked about her experiences in the Girls Club in Waterbury, CT as she proclaimed Thursday Girls Celebration Day in Worcester; the trustees of the Fuller Foundation received a picture/citation, and their very own, and very special "admission ticket" to use the Fuller Foundation pool at Girls Inc this summer; Linda Cavaioli and Jean King each received standing ovations to honor them as advocates for girls; and Jennifer Paradee gave us such a beautiful - and enduring - gift of th

Most of the pictures I took of the girls in action are blurry and don't begin to show how talented they are!  So instead, I am posting pictures that I took of the girls in groups, with families and alone at intermission time!

Thanks to Michelle, Heather and the gymnastics parents for a great show last night!  Best of luck at Nationals!!

GYMNASTICS GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH!!!

June 6, 2009 - 9:19pm -- cathisblog

Tonight over 100 of us were entertained, amused, impressed and awed by a group of about 40 girls - and coaches - from the Girls Inc Gymnastics Program performing in a great Circus Show.  The team is getting ready to go to Nationals in Savannah later this month.

And, sadly for all, for economic reasons, Girls Inc is not going to be able to sponsor the team after this year.  Michelle Marum, the gymnastics coach is working on a plan to try to open her own gym; Girls Inc is making decisions about how, not if, we are going to be keeping basic gymnastics in our programs and how we can...

CELEBRATE GIRLS on June 11

May 17, 2009 - 8:56pm -- cathisblog

At Girls Inc, we are on the countdown to the Girls Celebration Event on June 11th. It is the day we invite friends from across Central MA to celebrate the girls in our community, and say a special thanks to individuals who advocate for girls everyday.

This year, we are honoring Linda Cavaioli and Dr. Jean King as the 2009 Advocates for Girls. Both women have worked tirelessly to meet the needs of girls and women in their professional and their personal lives. We honor the Fuller Foundation as we dedicate our indoor acquatics center to join them in their commitment to promoting...
