Umass and Space

Another day at Umass to learn more about space. Today it  was in shrewsbury where we took a tour of a stimulator labatory. We learned that medical students and brand new doctors practice on dummies that can do anything a real patient can do in the hospital. We got to see an average aged man, ten year old boy, a pregnant woman, and a newborn baby dummies. It was really cool to see stuff like that. We also got to see how doctors learn how to tell if the breathing or heartbeat

UMASS trip!!!!!!

this is a baby medical dummie being taking care of.

today we went to umass to see interesting things such as the medical dummies. Nurses and Docters in training use them to train for real-life scenarios. So they breathe

and act like a real human beings. We even got to check the different heart beats of one them. Which I thought was pretty cool because one day yoou could experience

on becoming a doctor or nurse one day. Also we went to eat luch which was pretty cool. Then we went to video chat with the astronaut, Dr. Liz Warner and she had Read more »

UMass Medical University

On the day of August 5th, we went to UMASS Medical School. There we fallowed a student to one of the practice labs. There were maniquins which the students

practiced on before the real deal. There were different maniquins. For example, there was a child, a newborn and a regular man that you can talk to a nd find out what is

wrong. Next we had lunch and after that we had an interview with Dr. Liz Warren. She talked about Space and what happens when your up there. Then she answered our Read more »

Another Great day with the Goddard Girls!

Here you see a picture of a dummy they use in medical school! (:
a picture of astronaut food!
As you may know the goddard girls have the most fun this summer! You might not think so but to my opinion it is! today was a very great day! so the first thing of our day we went to UMASS medical school, to see most of the things people do there and most of the students do there. pne example would be is that they practice on dummies! it may sound funny but is very intersetin. Like the dummies actually! BREATHE! (: can you believe that like seriously, its really amazing in how it works. For an example, they use these dummies to practice on once again.

Simulation Science

Today we had a lot of fun. WE went to UMASS Medical School. That is a place where college graduates learn to be doctor, nurse, surgeons, and musch more. Umass memorial hospital is very big and new. When we got there we were split into groups. One group would discuss when the other wwent on a tour and visa versa. On the tour we went in to an area called the simulation center. There students or new doctors or nurses could preform procedures on dummies so they perfected them befor the preformed them on actual people. There were a lot of different dummies. Read more »

An Awesome day at Goddard Girls!!!

Today we went to umass!! We were learning about how bodies work in some ways but on a manaquin because they say they rather try it on a maniquin then a human cause it might mess up a human body. Also for lunch we had sandwiches. with cookies and soda. the lunch today was kind of good but not better tan we had recently. Also today we are going to the pool to do NASA games i guess.ANd also today we talked to an astronaut it was really cool. Sghe answerd all my questions. My main question was how do astronauts take showert because they dont take showers up there.

UMASS med school

Today, we went to UMASS medical school and did lots of cool stuff! First, we went on a tour of the simulation center. It's basically a bunch of rooms with these lifelike dolls that are used to simulate what it would be like to save a patients life. Rather than giving a real person a heart attack, scientists give a manakin a heart attack and students have to save its life. There was a normal human male manakin, an 8 year old manakin, a pregnant woman and baby manakin, a baby manakin, and a 10 minute old manakin. Read more »

UMass Medical University

During my fourth day at the Goddard Girls Summer Pogram, we went to UMass where I attended Chinese academics. In the morning we saw many mannequins that medical students practiced on before they started to work with real human beings. I learned that they debriefed after a session. The dummies were exactly like real people. They had a pulse, they could breathe and speak to my surprise. After that, we went to interwiew a person that was the manager of the international space station. Read more »

Building CEV prototypes at the Stem Lab

On August 4,

Goddard Girls have achieved to make prototypes of their own CEVs (Crew Exploration Vehicles) and presented with confidence. Our prototypes were made out of recyclable materials. Each CEV had fufil the requested nessesities when going to space by making the material represent them. Everyone worked as a team and we pulled it through. The whole day had been planed out and with that being said we spent the whole day there. Can't wait to enjoy the next days here!

Yesterday we mostly stayed at the University of Massetusetts. We first start of doing a project seeing how your leg can change size by 10 minutes. Read more »

A Day in being an Engineer

Ahh another in space was thrilling........Nahh sike we were in Umass campus creating prototype CEV. What is that you asked? Well CEV is crew exploration vehicles that go into space. Well it was all fun and games till lunch arrived

The Girls at the STEM Lab

8 - 4- 10

At the STEM Lab, a part of UMASS, the Goddard girls did numerous things. We saw what happened to our legs when the force of gravity was changed by leaning them against a wall at 90 degrees, and measuring certain points in our leg, then standing and measuring the same point, then seeing what part of our legs expanded or contracted due to the change in gravity force. Goddard Girls

Yesterday we went to the Stem Lab in Worcester. We all did an activity called Leg Up, this activity wasnt all that fun but it was very educational, the activity was to simulate the problems that the astronauts have in space. We worked on that activity for a while and then we talked about it and what we found. After that we had about a half an hour to desighn a CEV which is a space vehichle. That was pretty fun. Then it was lunch time PIZZA! very good. Afterwards we built our CEV and then we presented it this was a pretty fun day.

stem labratory

During my third day at goddard girls summer program, we went to the umass stem labratory and I had lots of fun. In the morning, I did an experiment on body fluids and leg circumference. I learned that on Earth your body fluid is below heart level, but on the moon the water or H2o in your body is the same in all parts of the body. It is because of this that astronauts do not feel thirsty. In the afternoon, I really enjoyed designing, building, and demonstrating my cev. I learned that CEV is an acronym that stands for crew explorartion vehicle. Read more »

Cev Creativity

The Goddard Girls went to the STEM lab again yesterday. First we talked about how astronauts feel on space and how they feel when their fluid travel up and around thier bodies due the anti-gravity in space. Then we started to design our CEV's [crew exploration vehicle]. We finished buliding them after lunch and they looked really nice as the finished product. The we all took a little walk to take a picture at the Umass sign and went home. So  Far, So good! :]
