August 2, 2010 - 3:34pm -- thinksmart

When you hear the word, "diva", you must instantly think : "sassy, sweet, fashionable, independent". Obviously, the word "armor" doesn't come to mind at first. Neither does "renissance, medival, or gothic". It's actually far from it. But the DaVinci Divas of this very Girls Inc. were learning about the other side of the typical story of the damsel in distress and the knight in shining armor, Friday, July 30th.  We learned about the typical medival male behind a suit of armor. 9 times out of 10 it was a particularly rich kid from the 14th century, showing off all of Daddy's money. Some of them...

News Updates and Fun Things....

April 30, 2010 - 2:00pm -- cathisblog

WOW!  It has been a long time since I posted anything on the blog -- that's because I have been so busy doing so many exciting things!

Three weeks ago Felicia Riffelmacher, 2nd VP on the Board and I attended the Girls Inc National Conference in Washington DC.  It was a great opportunity for us to participate in conversations with other CEOs and Board members from affiliates across the country.  All of us celebrated and bid farewell to Joyce Roche, our outgoing National CEO and welcomed Judy Vredenburgh, the new CEO.  We also spent a day on Capitol Hill.

Dear Girls Inc Families and the Worcester Community:

It has been my privilege to serve as a leader of Girls Inc of Worcester for the past 17 months.  As you may have seen in today’s newspaper, last week I gave the Board of Directors my notice of resignation effective June 30, 2010.  The Board has committed to working together with me, the staff and the community to create a healthy and productive transition process.  Please know that they remain very supportive of the programs and our girls.

My decision followed months of thoughtful reflection. So that...

Yesterday was UNUM day FOR GIRLS INC of Worcester. And what a day it was!  We had not one,  but two awesome experiences for our girls yesterday, thanks to UNUM.

Fifteen middle and high school girls (in our UNUM sponsored GALS program) participated in a day long Leadership Academy at UNUM, learning skills in resume preparation, public speaking and modeling/etiquette and style.  The program finished with a very interactive discussion between the girls and an Executive Panel about success, learning through experience and setting personal goals.  I was there as an "observer" and was...

Today was a very creative day at Girls Inc of Worcester!  The 25 girls who participated in the Presidents' Day program pitched in with two adult (Gina Fleury and Kofi Poku) and two teen volunteers (Yaa and Adwoa Poku) to create masterpiece murals that will be proudly displayed in the Winthrop House lobby for months to come.

The girls wore Women's Initiative t-shirts that came down to their ankles as smocks... they had as much paint on themselves as they did on the canvas... they worked together as a team to create the pictures... and I think you will agree that they did an AWESOME...

Fuller Aquatics Center

Happy 2010!  At Girls Inc of Worcester we are bringing the new year in by moving forward with our strategic planning process and updating the look of our Providence Street building with new windows in the Fuller Aquatics Center.

The snows of a New England Winter can get some people down, but not us!  This month we have put the new windows in the pool area - partially funded by a grant from the United Way of Central MA.  The new glass block windows brighten the room and are a great addition - inside and out!

Last week the Board/Staff Strategic Planning Task Force had its first...
