Moon Walk at MIT

August 3, 2010 - 3:28pm -- leadacademy

Today we took a bus to Cambridge. It took about 45 minutes. Then we went into this building about aerospace adn met these two people. The were both scientists. One was named Brad and he brought us into his lab which was the Motor Vehicle lab. He shwed us a lot of cool machines. He Showed us a centrifuge which was this platform where a person layed down and spun around the center of rotation. We learned about the inner ear and the liquids inside it. Then we went in the other part of the lab and Brad talked to us about space. He told us space suits are very hard to move in and he showed us why. Then he showed us a machine that could simulate the stress of making different movements of a person in a space suit. We found out that it was very hard to move in a space suit because of the gas inside opf it. Brad told us that there could be a better or different design for a space suit. This was the only working one of these machines in the whole world and it was donated by NASA. He said there needed to be pressure inside the space suit on your body. That is why in the old fashioned suits the is a lot of compressed air in side. This makes it very hard to move. But if youcould make the suit very tight that would apply the same pressure and it would be much easier to move around in. Both suits had their different challenges and tradeoffs though. Next we went to lunch and we had subway. I got a delicious sandwich. WE came back to the lab to do something very exciting. That was going on the moon bounce which could simulate walking on the moon and mars. Gou got strapped in and hung up in the air a little and then you had to try to walk on a tred mill. The tendancy for people was to walk on the ball of their feet. I do not know why but my sister did not she walked just like she does on earth. Brad and his crew had made prototypes of those new tight space suits and they were really sophisticated and exciting. I thought today was really fun. But i cant wait to go home because we have a chinese exchange student staying with us for nine days. Her American Name is Chris and she is very fun to be with event though we do not know chinese and she barely knows english. I have so far had a good week and iu hope for more fun expieriences ahead.
