Girls Celebration - A Very Special Event!

Thursday afternoon, June 11, over 150 friends - old and new - gathered at Girls Inc's Winthrop House for a CELEBRATION event.  We honored Dr. Jean King and Linda Cavaioli as our 2009 Advocates for Girls, dedicated The George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation Aquatics Center and unveiled the beautiful Giving Tree mural, handcrafted for us by Jennifer Paradee. "I saw so many old friends that it was like a family reunion," said Maureen Gray, Board member at the end of the event.  "They were so glad to be back."

Most of the pictures I took of the girls in action are blurry and don't begin to show how talented they are!  So instead, I am posting pictures that I took of the girls in groups, with families and alone at intermission time! 

Thanks to Michelle, Heather and the gymnastics parents for a great show last night!  Best of luck at Nationals!!

GYMNASTICS GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH!!!

Tonight over 100 of us were entertained, amused, impressed and awed by a group of about 40 girls - and coaches - from the Girls Inc Gymnastics Program performing in a great Circus Show.  The team is getting ready to go to Nationals in Savannah later this month. 

And, sadly for all, for economic reasons, Girls Inc is not going to be able to sponsor the team after this year.  Michelle Marum, the gymnastics coach is working on a plan to try to open her own gym; Girls Inc is making decisions about how, not if, we are going to be keeping basic gymnastics in our programs and how we can...

Worcester Tree Initiative

What a great week for Girls Inc and Worcester!!!

  • Girls Inc and I were honored on Thursday morning, June 4 at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce's Breakfast Club Salute at Mechanics Hall. 
  • The Worcester Tree Initiative hosted a tree planting clinic and tree give away in our parking lot this morning - over 75 trees found new homes, including three that they planted in front of our auditorium

Girls Celebration Countdown Continues....

The countdown to the big day is going by quickly! The Silent Auction baskets are coming together with great opportunities inside each one!  The beautiful new mosaic will be installed this week.  The food is ordered... and the barbeque will be awesome! 

It's like Christmas in June!   Hope you can join us!  The funds we will raise go to our summer programs.  How much better than that can it get??  Tell your friends --

At Girls Inc, we are on the countdown to the Girls Celebration Event on June 11th. It is the day we invite friends from across Central MA to celebrate the girls in our community, and say a special thanks to individuals who advocate for girls everyday.

This year, we are honoring Linda Cavaioli and Dr. Jean King as the 2009 Advocates for Girls. For ninety-three years, Girls Incorporated of Worcester has provided a safe and enriching environment for thousands of children.  During the summer months, Girls Inc. is committed to providing inner-city youth, who cannot afford the cost of summer camp, the opportunity to attend our quality programs offered at Camp Kinneywood, our 110-acre outdoor camp located in Worcester near the Holden Reservoir, and at Winthrop House, our in-town facility located at 125 Providence Street.

Changing Seasons, New Programs Coming!

At Girls Inc, we are making some exciting changes to our programming that will start this summer and really take off next fall. Like the spring weather with its temperature ups and downs and rainy days, these changes will require some getting used to! But we can promise you that they will be GREAT!

The statistics about childhood obesity and its health effects are startling and troubling, with the increased risks for diabetes, depression, risky behavior and learning problems well documented. That is why the primary focus of our new programming this fall will be on our intensive FIT...

Camp Kinneywood Clean-Up Weekend

Our hope is to have dozens of willing hands and hearts that will make light work as we get camp ready for the summer.  Girls Inc. needs adult volunteers ready to rake, paint, and clean. Volunteers may join us for one or both days and all are welcome; we have organized the work schedules in three hour blocks on both days.  Adults with carpentry and electrical background or volunteers willing to learn are encouraged.  We hope you will join us for this clean-up weekend - Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm.  Refreshments and lunch will be served.

Taking steps girls

Over the last two weeks, Girls Inc has provided leadership for three important community programs: Dresses for a Cure (4/17), Take Our Daughters to Work Day (4/23) and the Taking Steps Walk (4/26) to end violence against women and families.  The best part of all of these programs is that girls took the opportunities be their best - to lead - to positively impact our community. 

On April 17, dozens of girls from across Central MA were able to purchase fabulous prom dresses and fashion accessories for $20 - a fraction of their real cost - and enjoy and/or participate in a fashion show...
