Worcester Telegram & Gazette - Reach Within to Fnd the Truest Gift

Release Date:
Mon, 12/21/2015

Sometime this holiday season, during the period presents are bought, wrapped, stored beneath the tree and opened on Christmas, there may come a moment when we are reminded that one of the most wonderful and enduring gifts does not come with a purchase tag, nor is it presented with ribbons and bows.

It equally delights the giver and the receiver. It has no shelf life, because it is persistently passed on to others, whose numbers grow exponentially as the years go by.

Girls Promoting Safety (GPS) Program

GPS is a strengths-based violence prevention program of Girls Inc. of Worcester and the YWCA of Central Massachusetts.  Through intensive, interactive, weekly, school-based sessions, the GPS program helps girls in grades 7 and 8 to develop skills and competencies to avoid and/or prevent their involvement with violence. This allows girls to create and maintain a lifetime of healthy relationships.

Thinking SMART

This program connects middle school girls with professionals (particularly women) in  STEM fields. These "SMART Partners" help plan and deliver the program, encouraging girls to think like scientists by thinking with scientists.

Thinking SMART develops girls’ enthusiasm and skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through hands-on activities, girls explore, ask questions, persist, and solve problems.
