    Girls Celebration Events!

Last week was a really great week here at Girls Inc of Worcester.

On Monday, I went to the Statehouse in Boston with Sandy Mayrand from UMass' Regional Science Resource Center for the announcement of the Summer of Innovation grants from NASA.  We are partnered with UMass for 2 great weeks of STEM programming in late July and early August. Planning for these programs starts this week, so check back for details!

Yesterday was UNUM day FOR GIRLS INC of Worcester. And what a day it was!  We had not one,  but two awesome experiences for our girls yesterday, thanks to UNUM.

  • A Series of Very Fortunate Events

With great thanks to Deborah Penta for sending this great press release across the Worcester and Central MA area.  The article says it all!  Thanks - thanks - thanks!

TD Banknorth and the Worcester Tornados
TD Banknorth invited our GREAT new program manager, Kijah Clark and myself to attend the Worcester Tornadoes game (against the Quebec Capitales!) tonight.  The evening started out with a picnic dinner and a visit from Twister the Tornadoes' cuddly mascot.  We were able to spend time with several of the friendly TDBanknorth staff - getting to know them better and thanking them for their growing support of our economic literacy program!!!  And we had a chance to catch up with a few of our nonprofit colleagues.  Great night!  And, a bit of the truth - we left before the game was over so
  • WHAT A GREAT CELEBRATION!

Thursday's Girls' Celebration Event was my best day so far in 8 months and 1 week!  Mayor Konnie Lukes talked about her experiences in the Girls Club in Waterbury, CT as she proclaimed Thursday Girls Celebration Day in Worcester; the trustees of the Fuller Foundation received a picture/citation, and their very own, and very special "admission ticket" to use the Fuller Foundation pool at Girls Inc this summer; Linda Cavaioli and Jean King each received standing ovations to honor them as advocates for girls; and Jennifer Paradee gave us such a beautiful - and enduring - gift of th

  • Girls Celebration - A Very Special Event!

Thursday afternoon, June 11, over 150 friends - old and new - gathered at Girls Inc's Winthrop House for a CELEBRATION event.  We honored Dr. Jean King and Linda Cavaioli as our 2009 Advocates for Girls, dedicated The George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation Aquatics Center and unveiled the beautiful Giving Tree mural, handcrafted for us by Jennifer Paradee. "I saw so many old friends that it was like a family reunion," said Maureen Gray, Board member at the end of the event.  "They were so glad to be back."

Girls - Reaching us and teaching us how to make the world a better place

Over the last two weeks, Girls Inc has provided leadership for three important community programs: Dresses for a Cure (4/17), Take Our Daughters to Work Day (4/23) and the Taking Steps Walk (4/26) to end violence against women and families.  The best part of all of these programs is that girls took the opportunities be their best - to lead - to positively impact our community.

  • Join us for the Take Our Daughters To Work Day afternoon event

Girls Inc is really excited about Take Our Daughters to Work Day this year.  We start the day with a great breakfast program at Winthrop House. Senator Harriett Chandler and Pattie Hallberg from Girl Scouts will help welcome everyone - and then I will do a special interview with our inspiring new friend Jane Coken-Ryan from UMass Medical School.
